One of the biggest challenges with the newest addition to WWE’s gaming franchise, WWE 2K17, is how best to earn Virtual Currency. VC, as it’s also known, is a precious commodity within WWE 2K17. It is used to unlock legendary superstars, classic arenas, and classic championships. It’s also a critical part of the MyCareer Mode, as it allows you to advance your superstar in several different ways.
That being said, there are a few different ways to go about earning VC. Before I get into what I feel is the easiest, and quickest, way to rack up VC, I want to cover a few of the other ways.
Selling Merchandise in MyCareer Mode
I wanted to get this one out of the way, because while this one may seem easy, it’s really the least useful way of racking up Virtual Currency available to you. While playing in MyCareer Mode, if you equip your character with a custom t-shirt adorned with a logo, you can earn VC based on how well the shirt sells. If your popularity is high, you can manage up to 6000 or 7000 VC a week.
The problem is that your sales dip significantly after only a few weeks, and having to constantly change your shirt can become a pain, especially considering how unpredictable the function of merchandise sales can be. Don’t get frustrated trying to sell shirts. It’s not worth your time. Just ignore this nonsense.
Perform in Five Star Matches
If you enjoy playing varying types of matches, this can be the most fun and least redundant way to earn VC. It’s earned in any mode, including MyCareer, Exhibition, and Universe. Regardless of the type of match you play, or how it turns out, you’ll receive VC based on how excited the crowd gets throughout the match. Believe it or not, having a five-star match is pretty simple.
If you watch the meter in the top-left, you’ll see which things add to the rating for the match. Doing the same moves over and over again will negatively affect it, so changing things up is a good thing. If you’re in a special match type, using weapons and executing “OMG! Moments” are both very effective. Your best bet is also to keep Momentum Gain on “FAST,” because executing as many signatures and finishers as possible throughout the match will help you push towards a five-star rating.
Lastly, you need to WIN. If you lose a match, even if there’s a five-star rating, you’ll get significantly less VC. For example, a good five-star win in Exhibition might net you 9000 VC, while one in MyCareer Mode has net me as much as 14000 VC. Those same matches are only going to give you a fraction of that amount if you lose. I’ve lost a five-star match in exhibition and gained less than 3000 VC, which is extremely frustrating after you’ve put the work in to earn that five-star rating.
Cut Promos in MyCareer and Universe Mode
This is my last way to effectively gain VC, and to me it’s by far the simplest. It may seem a bit redundant, but it’s easy to do while multitasking. Whether that means you’re reading, listening to something, or playing a game on your phone or a mobile console simultaneously, it’s not difficult to pull off. I know this because I’m actually cutting promos in Universe Mode while I’m writing this article. I’m 100% serious about that.
First, I need to briefly touch on promos if you’re not familiar with them. This is a new feature to WWE 2K17, in which a superstar enters the ring with a microphone and chooses between four options representing a chunk of dialogue to speak to the crowd. In order to cut the best promo, you have to look at the options and see which will get the best reaction as a heel or a face, whichever you’re aiming for.
Personally, heel promos are the easiest for me. Promos are an inexact science, but usually you can’t go wrong with insulting the crowd and talking about how you love The Authority. Yeah, sometimes it really is that simple. For face promos, usually you’re best off flattering the crowd and being a straight-shooter.
While you can do this will going through MyCareer Mode, I prefer grinding it out in Universe Mode. Simply set up your show, and before you start an event, go into edit and place a self-promotion segment with a superstar with a high Mic Performance attribute (like John Cena, The Rock, or Steve Austin). You can even put the same superstar in every segment.
Ignore the matches, and just leave them as they are. Start the show, and simply do the promos yourself and simulate the matches. Again, promos aren’t exact, and I’ve flubbed my fair share, but when they go right it’s only a few seconds of work for a few thousand VC. I’ve gotten just shy of 10000 VC in a well-executed Call Out promo, and as much as 8000 in a Self Promotion promo.
Compared to the several minutes you could spend competing in matches to earn nearly the same amount, it’s hard to argue with the benefit of using promos to rack up VC quickly. That’s not to say that it’s the only way, but if you want to get VC fast, promos are (in my opinion) your best bet.
